Using Other Routers
From Fab Lab wiki
While there are hundreds of different manufacturers and models of router, there are only a few companies that make the key components. The major factors that determine support are:
- ""Chipset"" (Boradcom and Atheros have best support)
- ""Bootloader"" (some are better than others... We're no experts)
- ""Flash Memory"" (4MB minimum)
- ""RAM"" (8MB minimum)
The first place to look to find out if your hardware can be flashed with OpenWRT is the | OpenWRT hardware support page Determine the Make, Model and Hardware Revision of the router (This information is usually located on a sticker underneath the router), and look it up in the table. Find your router in the table according to the Make, Model and Hardware Revision. Once you locate it, scan all the way to the rightmost column in the row for your router. If that cell says "Supported", then your router will work for sure. Routers labeled "WiP" often also work, but might need a little prodding. This list is not fully up to date, so if you don't see your router there also try googling for your router model with "openwrt" in the search string.
Now here's the rub: Up to version 2.x we were using the stock OpenWRT image and then running a script to add Fabfi features. As of v3 we are building all-inclusive images, which means if you have a router that we're not building images form, you have to make one yourself. (Don't worry, it's easy. We show you how HERE)
You'll find the play by play of several failed routers we've tested in the | blog.
If you create a working image we'd love to add it here.
