Base Station, the FabLab
The Fablab serves as the uplink to the web for FabFi Jalalabad, including the MIT Open CourseWare mirror. It makes direct links to the Public Hospital water tower and Bagrami village.
The footlocker contains the central routing hub for all the FabFi links, and power from a UPS. The large reflector *link to large reflector file* is directed toward the water tower *direction*, and the small acrylic one *link to reflector file* points to Bagrami *direction*.
Public Hospital Water Tower
The Public Hospital water tower is the endpoint of the long-range backhaul link from the FabLab to Jalalabad City. It uses the same reflector as the FabLab side of the link for the backhaul, and provides downlinks to both the Public Hospital administration building and a local NGO through two small wooden reflectors *link to small wooden reflector*. Specs on the back-haul link at setup were:
- Jalalabad City District 3
- Distance: 3,880m
- Signal Strength: -67 to -79 dBm, weather dependent. Nominally, it is about -72 dBm
- Noise Floor: -92 dBm
- Throughput: 11.4Mbps (link speed, not internet)
Public Hospital Administration Building
The public hospital Admin link serves net to the entire hospital administration building by linking the FabFi endpoint to a wired switch.
- Jalalabad City District 3
- Distance: 57m
- Signal Strength: -41 dBm
- Noise Floor: -95 dBm
- Throughput: untested
OPM
This link is also fed from the water tower on channel 11.
- Jalalabad City District 3
- Distance: 326m
- Signal Strength: -68 dBm
- Noise Floor: -92 dBm
- Throughput: 1.8Mbps (to internet)
The signal strength is affected here by the placement of the tower-side reflector away from the edge of the platform on the water tower (see small reflector in water tower photo above). This was done deliberately because it eased the lashing of the reflector to the platform and the signal margin was available.
Bagrami Village
The link to Bagrami features the 18" acrylic antenna design (version 0.1) that was created in the Jalalabad FabLab. A second router was also added to provide a local wireless net for the school, the roof of which is home to the reflector. Bagrami will be using the net to do teacher training with OLPCs- Bagrami (suburb to the west of Jalalabad City)
- Distance: 375m
- Signal Strength: -65 dBm
- Noise Floor: -92 dBm
- Throughput: untested
The lashing job pictured at left was improved markedly in the final installation...
IOC
The link to the IOC school features the 18" acrylic antenna design (version 1.0) that was created in the Jalalabad FabLab. This is the first link that has been made with the FabLab crew absent, and we're very proud of the local talent!- Jalalabad City District 3
