Overview

FabFi is an open-source, FabLab-grown system using common building materials and off-the-shelf electronics to transmit wireless ethernet signals across distances of up to several miles. In Jalalbad, the site of Afghanistan's first FabLab, Fabfi has a functioning, user-supported, multiple point-point network providing internet, MIT OpenCourseWare (OCW) and other resources from the FabLab.

This collection of pages contains everything needed to build, configure and deploy a FabFi link. Send questions, comments, new features, etc. to fabfi at fabfolk dot com.

Current Implementation - FabFi version 2.0 (updated 7 september 2009)

Physical Layout

Jalalabad's FabFi implementation consists of (lots of) remote nodes which provides an uplink and Open Courseware mirror. The long link in the system is 3,880m. Sites include (partial list):

  • Bagrami Village (375m to FabLab)
  • Public Hospital Water Tower (3,880m to FabLab)
  • Public Hospital Administration Building (57m to Water Tower)
  • Several NGO offices (300m - 500m to Water Tower)
  • Several private Afghan residences (500m - 4,000m to Water Tower)

All nodes use Linksys WRT54GL wireless routers running OpenWRT 8.09.1 (Kamikaze) firmware. A variety of reflector designs have been implemented ranging in size from 4' to 18", made from both signboard and acrylic, with chicken wire, stainless woven mesh and window screen as reflective materials.
