The challenge coin program provides an opportunity for Afghans to learn advanced digital fabrication methods and management skills. Using the equipment and community support structure of the FabLab, program participants design and produce souvenir tokens for purchase by local organizations. The participants use a computer-controlled milling machine to etch out a three-dimensional positive replica of the coin design, then create a flexible negative mold which is used to produce the final coins. A prototypical methodology was developed in November 2008 and demonstrated to members of the FabLab community. The program is still in development and requires the establishment of a management/incentive structure (like the t-shirt club) as well as additional training for the FabLab community.
