The Base Case (Stock Power)

The WRT54GL, our preferred device, ships with a switching 100-240v power supply that has proven remarkably reliable in Afghanistan, using some of the most awful power I've ever seen. Voltages ranged erratically between 130V and 220V and the stock power brick handled it without missing a beat. What the stock brick can't handle, of course is total power failure.

Batteries

one of the best features of the WRT54GL is that it runs on unregulated 12V DC, this means that any standard car or small engine battery can be used to power them. This is great in lots of rural places. Just make sure you wire the polarity on the plug right. The tip (wire with white line on it from the power brick) is +.

As of this update we have not tried any other power options, though there are a number of ideas simmering...
