Introduction

This page explains how to turn a NEW Asus WL520GU into a fabfi for the first time. Once the device has had the fabfi firmware installed for the first time, you may follow the common procedures on the Router Tech page for further configuration and updating. Any deviation from those common processes will be outlined here. Go here if you are upgrading.

Flashing the FabFi Image (First Time Only)

Downloads

  • Firmware Image: You will need the 520GU .trx file: fabfi-asus_wl520gu.trx Download this to your computer by right clicking on the link and selecting save.
  • TFTP: check to see that you have TFTP interface on your computer. TFTP is built in to Linux and MacOS and appears to be built in to Windows XP. You may have to Enable TFTP in Windows Vista which will take about 2 minutes. If all else fails you can download a TFTP client for your operating system by searching for "TFTP client <your operating system>" online.

Updating the firmware

To update the Asus firmware, you will use it's handy TFTP interface.

Read the directions all way through once before starting.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE RELIABLE POWER. If you lose power during the upgrade, you might brick your router.

Windows Linux
Hold down the black reset button on the router while inserting the power plug. Continue to hold the button until the power light flashes 1x/sec.
Connect to your router using an ethernet cable. Plug it into port 4 of the router
Set your computer's network settings to an IP address in the 192.168.1.x address space (ex: 192.168.1.10), with a gateway of 192.168.1.1 and a netmask of 255.255.255.0. The DNS setting does not matter. You should be able to ping 192.168.1.1
Open a command prompt then type
tftp -i 192.168.1.1 PUT <path to binary on your computer>
Open terminal then type
 tftp 192.168.1.1

then at the new prompt

mode binary
put <path to binary on your computer>

When it is complete, type

quit
WAIT 2 MINUTES
Remove power from the router and then power back on
WAIT 2 MINUTE (you should see the power light turn solid green after 2 minutes)
unplug your Ethernet cable, wait 30 seconds and plug back in (this will refresh you IP address)
proceed to Initial Configuration

Future upgrades

Once you have flashed the device with the Fabfi firmware, upgrades can be performed using the fabfi-asus_wl520gu.trx file and the standard upgrade procedure.
